Top o’ the mornin’ to you!

We recently celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day, and today we’ll be taking a look at some of the history and lore which surround the holiday.

Who Was St. Patrick?

The patron saint of Ireland was born in England over 1500 years ago. He was kidnaped and taken to Ireland as a young adult. He eventually returned home to England and studied there as a monk. After some time, he dreamed of a crowd of Irish people begging him to return to them.Patrick believed this dream to be a calling from God, so he returned to Ireland and spread Christianity there.

One of his most famous Christian analogies is that of Ireland’s clover, which he used to explain God’s tri-oneness. He is also said to have driven all the snakes out of Ireland due to his faith in God, though many believe that story to be merely legend.

So Many Legends

Many other legends and traditions surrounding Saint Patrick have grown to create the holiday we know today. What began as a way to commemorate the saint’s death has turned into a day of parties, shamrocks, and everything green. Though Patrick was originally depicted in azure blue, Irish rebels in the 1900s chose the shamrock and its green hue to represent their political and religious movement. Ever since then, the color has been associated with the Irish and their patron saint. Saint Patrick’s Day was first celebrated in America and quickly became a way for Irish immigrants to show off their culture and heritage with pride. Now it is celebrated all over the
world, particularly in the west. After all, who could resist a day to spend with family and friends, practicing Irish accents?

He Wasn’t A Leprechaun

And then, of course, there’s the leprechaun: a small, smiling figure draped in green and shrouded in mystery. If you don’t wear green, too, you might get pinched!

Legend has it that if you reach the end of a rainbow, you’ll find a pot of gold that a leprechaun has stashed. Unfortunately, they bury the gold so humans can’t find it. Also, unfortunately, leprechauns are not real. However, you don’t need a leprechaun or a rainbow to reach your real
“pot of gold”. With hard work, determination, and perhaps a little bit of luck, you can make your dreams a reality.
