Types of Steel Buildings
Understanding the Options
Why do Hybrid web truss buildings rise above?
When it comes to choosing a steel building, not all systems are created equal. From garages and aircraft hangars to barndominiums and workshops, to barns and riding arenas, steel buildings (often referred to as metal buildings) come in a variety of frame types — each with different benefits, limitations, and long-term performance factors.
At Miracle Truss®, we specialize in what we believe is the smartest, strongest, and most versatile system available: a hybrid steel web truss building. But before we dig into why that matters, here’s a look at the most common types of steel (and metal) buildings in the market today.
Common Types of Steel Building Systems
Hybrid Steel Buildings
Hybrid steel buildings combine the strength of clear-span steel web trusses with the flexibility of wood secondary framing. The open design gives you usable interior space, while the wood framing makes it easier to add insulation, doors, windows, and interior finishes as your needs evolve.
Designed for DIY builders and contractors alike, these versatile building kits can be customized for garages, workshops, agricultural buildings, barndominiums, and more—putting you in control of your build.
Rigid Frame
Steel Buildings (aka I-Beam)
This traditional building type uses large, pre-formed steel I-beams as the primary structure. While strong, these rigid frame buildings often require cranes, specialty crews, and higher budgets. Customization is limited without retrofitting due to larger spans between connecting members, and they’re generally not considered DIY-friendly.
Plate Beam-Style
Rigid Frame Buildings
These buildings use fabricated plate beams instead of rolled I-beams, offering more customization for unique load requirements or extremely wide spans using tapered columns and rafters. Common in large commercial or industrial projects, plate beam-style buildings are rarely suited for residential, hobby, or self-build applications due to cost, complexity, design limitations as well as challenging to work with for most DIY – or smaller contractors.
Cold-Formed
Steel Buildings
Made from roll-formed, light-gauge steel components, cold-formed buildings can be a cost-effective option for smaller projects and milder climates. However, they typically lack the structural integrity needed for large clear spans and may underperform under heavy snow, high winds, or seismic stress.
Some systems attempt to reinforce cold-formed designs (using formed angles and rods) by incorporating structural steel cords but these hybrid approaches still often offer limited layout flexibility and reduced long-term durability compared to structural steel systems.
Pole Barns
(Post-Frame Buildings)
Popular in agricultural use, pole barns (aka stick built) are wood-framed buildings with metal siding and roofing. While cost-effective initially, they’re generally more susceptible to rot, pests, and warping over time due to wood posts going into the ground. They’re not technically “steel buildings,” though often grouped with them. They also can’t always offer necessary resistance to high winds and heavier loads.
Tube Steel
Buildings
Using hollow tube framing, these are common for carports and small sheds. While easy to assemble, tube steel buildings are generally not engineered for larger spans, wind loads, or long-term durability.
Quonset Buildings
(Arch Steel Buildings)
Originally developed for military use, Quonset buildings are recognizable by their semi-circular or arched shape. Made from corrugated, cold-formed galvanized steel panels that bolt together, they’re often marketed as low-cost, DIY-friendly kits.
These structures may work well for basic storage or temporary use, but for most residential, commercial, or flexible-use projects, a clear-span hybrid web truss system offers far more adaptability, comfort, and long-term value.
So why use a Miracle Truss® hybrid web truss building over other metal building types?
At the top of the list for strength, flexibility, and user-friendliness is the hybrid steel web truss system — our specialty.
We use welded structural steel trusses (not bent or roll-formed) as the backbone of your building. These provide unmatched clear-span strength, long-term stability, and design freedom. Some use rebar or round stock for the webbing, but we use structural angle steel. We then integrate secondary wood framing (edge mounted) where it performs best — for easier interior finishing, better insulation compatibility, and customization with standard materials.
This makes Miracle Truss® the perfect middle ground between heavy commercial steel buildings and basic pole barns — offering the strength of steel with the workability of wood.
